Political Action

WIN provides its members with opportunities to volunteer and work for campaigns, shape the agenda for the next generation of Democrats, and train to meet the demands of the field and public office. WIN members are committed to supporting a Democratic, pro-choice future.  Members network, share resources, and offer each other encouragement to promote change on Capitol Hill, across the country, and around the globe.

WIN is proud to have a political team that works to enhance our pro-choice democratic values through WIN programming and in Congress. We have five political tracks:

Practice Your Politics (PYP) is a political initiative of WIN inspired by our members' desire to live out their political values at the community level.  Our aim is to have an immediate impact on causes that we care about and strengthen relationships with local organizations.  Practice Your Politics events will connect local-area direct service work with larger political change.

Past events have included building safe sex kits with Fight HIV in DC, beautifying our public spaces and parks as part of the MLK Day of Service, and a happy hour in partnership with our Membership Team to raise awareness about violence against women and support organizations working to address this issue in DC.

WINning Political Action is responsible for working with WIN's Political Director to create a coordinated response to today's pressing political issues. This initiative creates a space for WIN members to engage in action oriented opportunities including demonstrations, letters to the editor, calls or emails to Congress, and other creative strategies to influence current political debates.  The Chairs of WINning Political Action also work with the Political Director and the Executive Committee to identify opportunities to elevate WIN's voice on emerging political issues that are in line with our mission.

This year WINning Political Action has taken on the following issues: health care reform and violence against women.  WINning Political Action also worked with a broad coalition of democratic organizations in DC to organize a State of the Union Watch Party.

The Congressional Council Liaisons highlight our Congressional Council members and their work in WIN communications and coordinate their participation in a variety of WIN events.  The Liaisons work with the Political Director to plan and execute the annual Congressional Council reception on the Hill in honor of the pro-choice Democratic women of Congress.  This is an exclusive, WIN member only event that provides a unique opportunity to celebrate and hear directly from members of the Congressional Council.

The Liaisons also help identify and invite new Congresswomen to join the Congressional Council.

WIN's Political Training program identifies and plans political training opportunities for WIN members.  These trainings offer WIN members an opportunity to increase their knowledge and obtain concrete skills that will help them succeed and advance in the political world.  We seek to build and strengthen partnerships with other political training organizations to co-host events and negotiate discounts at trainings for WIN members.

Virginia is for WINners
was our initiative to connect our members to information, events, and direct action related to the 2009 Virginia races and special elections in 2010.  We mobilized our members in DC, VA and MD to help elect pro-choice, Democratic candidates in Virginia.  Activities included phonebanks, canvasses, and an election night watch party.  Virginia is for WINners partnered with NARAL Virginia and PPMW on phonebanks and coordinated a large coalition of local Democratic organizations to host of GOTV happy hour and two canvass weekends.

This initiative will likely be expanded for the 2014 elections to get WIN members educated about and involved in campaigns throughout the country.
